7/09 Copper Kangaroos…

I gradually lost count of the days we stayed in Perth, but the journey had been full of excitement and enriched. We still get up at approximately 9 a.m. every day, cooking the toasts in the frying pan with butter. It made people’s mouths water and craving for more.

The free food box mentioned earlier was always a surprise. There was a jar of barbecue sauce and some too-hard-too-eat cookies inside the other day, as for today, we got a pretty decent bottle of salt and an almost-full pack of pasta. And that meant free dinner ingredients that could last for a few days.

We had scheduled to pay Fremantle a visit and have some of their well-known fish and chips, as for today, we go check out the copper kangaroos at Town Hall. Roxie and I headed west, both of us were feeling extremely uncomfortable today and I kept scratching my sore and itchy left eye. However we kept our promise and made it to the kangaroos where we mounted them and took several funny pictures. A member of Greenpeace shook our hands and chatted with us on the way, he looked like a leprechaun from Ireland with orange nostrils sticking out like Brussels sprout. He also complimented about my pronunciation and speaking that made my heart leapt. By the way, he had this really cool accent I would love to have. It’s a shame they only took the locals for their members and that’s when we bid each other goodbye.

Still heading west, differentiated from alleys and streets full of tourists and youngsters, we saw mostly skyscrapers and people in suits. But the view changed into a small town after passing all the buildings, Roxie moaned about hunger in the stomach so we stopped at some local restaurants to have a bite. It’s more like a kitchen than a restaurant actually; I picked a gigantic beef gravy sub that cost me 7.5 AUD while Roxie bought nothing. She nibbled some of my sandwich and I just stared, who’s the one that complained about hunger earlier, huh?

Anyway, we bumped into the famous Queen’s Garden after feeling comfortable and fed, it was a deserted Tuesday and only a few joggers were to be seen. We circled the Garden a couple of rounds and continued on our journey. Next stop, Victoria Park, the so called Kangaroo Island where we saw not a thing with a tail moving in sight. I must have been old for my legs and calves were so sore that I doubted that they had lost the function of walking.

The riverbank made up most of our disappointment. The water was clean and pure, we discovered packs of Australian giant ants moving around…a sudden pour of rain soaked us wet and none of us carried an umbrella with us. We sat under a tree eating gummy bears hoping for the rain to stop. We took chance to run forward every time the rain turns into a drizzle, finally we got out of the countryside and caught a bus back to the CBD.

It took several hours to get back and both of us were drained off energy. Hunger took over control but still Roxie made no further complaints, I was just so proud of her. We bought a can of beef and some tuna chunks, two cans of sardines, 24 slices of cheese, another two jars of spaghetti sauce (the white one) and last but not least, a full on barbecued chicken. There was this friendly guy from Scotland who recommended the sardines to us while we were confused over the difference of brine, oil and spring water tuna cans. Woolworths is always the perfect place to visit!

Roxie made the call to activate his sim card and wifi after retrieving the card from one of the hostel fellas, Steven. I put Roxie on the phone and the receiver on the other hand was an Indian guy with heavy accent. It took Roxie about fifteen minutes to finish the procedure and she seemed frustrated. With Internet available, it’s time to run a safety check with our parents! We talked to Don and the others at night and had some yogurt, instant noodles for midnight snacks. Due to our exhausted situation, we decided to postpone the Fremantle trip tomorrow and go to Harbor Town instead. Good luck with that XD
