7/07 A foreign Valentine’s Day

Today’s Valentine’s Day, the one in July to be exact. But we felt none of the atmosphere; it’s probably because most of the roommates were still fully asleep. We got out of the bed early before the sun rose due to the coldness and thin quilts. Roxie made the same decision and it was just unbelievable, normally she never gets up before noon. It’s about eight in the morning and there were few movements in the kitchen. We baked some toasts and spread some chocolate paste that gave us an energetic boost. The Swedish guy checked out before us in order to catch his plane, so did the friendly Indian. We’ll miss them. But now it’s time to march our way to the CBD, again, and visit the southern Perth.

You wouldn't believe the distance we covered today on foot. We went through the center of Perth and got to Royal King’s Park and then to the beach side of Southern Perth. Unfortunately we don’t have a map here; otherwise you will definitely be awed. It’s a very long distance anyway. The wind cut like blades in the morning but all the sunshine made it better and we lived. Roxie and I finally had our eyes on the largest wildlife park in Perth accompanied by chatting, laughter and hours of walking. Dozens of water birds with white-colored body and black beak greeted us in an aggressive manner: they rushed toward us in packs and let out all kinds of sharp noises. Needless to say, we were unwelcomed there. I kicked my feet in the air and waved my fists trying to scare the intruders off, eventually we dodged into a gap and broke out of the surrounding. (King’s Park was full of species and bonsai of every kind, including the furious birds that attacked us earlier)

It took us about two hours or so to finish our tour in the park and made our way to Southern Perth through the bridge. We crossed the ocean that cut the two places in the middle and people were cycling all around us. As the weather heated and temperature rose, we started seeing tons of white sand and bird-feces-covered rocks. Originally e were looking for the famous fish and chips in the surrounding area, but came to a disappointing result. Guess it would have to wait for another day.

What’s worth mentioning is that the toilets there were fully automatic and very cool. Including the watering system, from the door to the flushing, it’s something we should also have in Taiwan.

It’s our first time to the local department store Myer and for god’s sake we had found Woolworths! It’s awesome and fully staffed with goodies of various types, just the number of brands in the chees section could have easily knocked me flat out. We bought two slices of steak, butter and some mushrooms we were going to have for dinner. The cashiering counter was a shock, too, which was fully automatic. You have to beep and pack and pay all by yourself, totally self-functioning from the start to the end and it was definitely a fresh experience. On our way back home we stopped to watch a stunt performed by one of the street performers. He cracked the people up with jokes and started riding a tall unicycle. Everything was perfect so far until we got back to the hostel and found the kitchen closed down for cleaning, guessed that we’d have to wait to have dinner.

Kitchen’s ready! And everyone was like sardines squeezing in trying to get their favorite cooking spot; we managed to get one among the crowd. After sparking up the match and lighting the stove, we slow-cooked our meal. I couldn’t say that our first time cooking had been amazing but it was edible and fine. The steak tasted bland and the mushrooms felt raw. I even had some instant noodles after the meal to fill my stomach. Roxie promised that she will cook me some spaghetti tomorrow (well just like she promised yesterday…so I better not get my hope up high) we wandered back to the city center under the moonlight hand in hand and headed to the supermarket. Most of the cookies and BBQ chicken were out of sight and it was packed with people, entirely different from the sight in the afternoon! We picked another loaf of cheap bread for breakfast tomorrow and some candies for our Miss Sweet-tooth. That’s when we went back to Britannia on William’s with overloaded satisfaction. Our legs felt sore after the full day of walking and hiking. And it’s weird that the free wifi could never be connected again after the first day : (
