China, officially named the People’s Republic of China, is one of the biggest countries in the world. Aside from its vast territory, China has over five thousands of history, is definitely one of the oldest countries. Within its long history, China’s form of government went through several changes. For a long period of time, this country remained as an empire with hereditary emperors. But in the last few decades, the form of government underwent massive changes. A group of people stood up against the Qing dynasty, aimed to end the monarchy once and for all and establish a democratic government. After they succeed in overthrowing the emperor, however, the communist party appeared in the mainland and was strengthening while the revolutionists were fighting against the Japanese. Sadly, the communism won in the end and ruled China ever since.
Under the rule of communist party, people in China lived a communism life which the production equipment and the economics are owned by the government. Their people were very poor yet worshipped their leader very much. Until the 1980s, the vice-premier Xiao Ping Deng advocated reforming the economic system into a “gradual capitalism”. From then on, China’s economy began to rise. And as we can see now, nowadays China’s economy is definitely growing fast, and its people is becoming rich. Many sociologists suggest that the adoption of Capitalism may eventually spur the democratization. And many studies have shown that the economic growth and the state of democracy are highly positive correlated. Yet, when discussing a country’s development, one should never overlook its cultural or even historical background. Especially when discussing China, such an old Asian country, if we exam it under the frame of other western countries. So whether China will eventually become one of the democratic country or not is definitely a topic very much worth discussing and interesting.
